Abstract: Aims and Objective: Aim is to assess maternal and fetal outcome in prelabour rupture of the membranes at term pregnancy.
Material and Methods: This prospective observational study was carried out over a period of 12 months on 98 women with ? 37 weeks period of gestation with PROM as per the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Diagnosis of PROM was done by detailed history and clinical examination by sterile vaginal speculum examination. Statistical analysis was done by SPSS software with p-value=0.05.
Results: Among 98 cases 69.4% primigravida, 30.6% multigravida. Maximum (46.9%) were in 20-24 years of age group and 60.2% was belonging to lower SES. 80% multigravida had previous history of PROM. Spontaneous onset of labour was seen in 71.4% cases and induction was done in 28.6% cases. 69.4% vaginal delivery seen. Cesarean section was performed in 30.6% cases with major indication fetal distress (46.6%). 1% of cases had chorioamnionitis and 10.2% of cases developed fever. Neonatal morbidity included birth asphyxia (45.8%), early onset neonatal sepsis (8.3%) and NICU admission rate was 25%.
Conclusion: Term prelabour rupture of the membranes is associated with significant maternal, fetal and neonatal complications. It is a big challenge to the Obstetricians and neonatologists to overcome it.
